SEONG-JAE DID NOT THINK, AT the moment, that Malcolm was entirely here.

Malcolm had been strangely silent as they had left Miss Iona’s apartment, barely even speaking to Sten when they stopped by HQ to drop the DNA sample with her, not even questioning why she was still there so late before settling into the Camaro to head home. Walking back into the apartment was…an odd experience. The picture of a life interrupted, the catastrophe of the furniture they had been in the middle of assembling, now left forgotten when so many other pressing matters had taken priority.

At some point, he thought, they would have to pick up these pieces everywhere, and put their lives back together.

But right now he was more worried about Malcolm’s pieces, as Malcolm kicked off his shoes at the door and then padded over to sink down on the foot of the bed with a groan, burying his face in his hands.

“Okay,” Malcolm said, finally breaking his silence with a weary sigh. “So…we’ve been cleared for active duty less than twenty-four hours, and we’ve already got two fucking hellacious cases on our hands.” He dragged his hands down, staring blankly over his fingertips. “We should probably review the footage on the Black case again, see if we missed anything the first time through. I’m not even sure where to start with Daniella Vasquez. We should probably meet with Gabi, get her full account instead of secondhand from Anjulie.”

Seong-Jae arched a brow. Shrugging out of his jacket, he hung it from the wall hooks behind the door, toed out of his motorcycle boots, then crossed the loft and sank down next to Malcolm, resting his elbows on his knees and watching his omr sidelong.

“Are you certain that seeing Ms. Leon is something you can handle right now?” he asked carefully. “All things considered.”

“Do I have a choice? I…fuck.” Shaking his head, Malcolm ground his knuckles underneath his lower lip. “I’ll figure that out after we talk to Vasquez tomorrow. He can at least tell us places Daniella frequented, people she was connected to, somewhere we can start piecing together a trail. It’s possible that she’s alive, but in hiding—afraid, keeping out of Matheson’s sight. If he did kill her, he’s smart enough that he’d have created a false trail covering his tracks by fitting clues as to her whereabouts into her life. If we want to find the truth, we need to find the lie he’d need to eliminate anything tying him to her death.”

“We need a body for that first,” Seong-Jae pointed out, but then stopped, leaning over against Malcolm, curling a hand against one thick arm that felt like solid-forged iron under his touch, tension in every line of Malcolm’s frame. “…Malcolm. We can do case work in the morning. We both always process better with a touch of distance to think things through. Is this truly what is on your mind right now?”

“…this is truly me grasping desperately at something to keep me from
